The film follows the life of Molly Bloom who fell out of competitive skiing after a debilitating injury and moved to LA where she got involved with underground poker and eventually struck out on her own and started running her own games until they were raided by the FBI.
Jessica Chastain gives an excellent performance and is backed by a strong supporting cast, including Idris Elba and Kevin Costner.
Additionally, the flashback narrative structure helps to keep the film moving and builds intrigue. Molly's Game is an incredibly captivating drama with an interesting story to tell and a positive message about standing up for ones principles.

They set a pace the movie somehow keeps up, although the rest of the story contains mostly people talking. But the editing is so breathless and the writing so on point that it sometimes feel like an action film, going back and forth.
The actors are top notch, especially Chastain and Elba, the camera work has a few trick up its sleeves too.
For a topic that does not sound particularly exciting on paper, the result is an incredibly engaging and ultimately even moving film.

Und selbst die geheimen, verruchten Pokerrunden wirken vollkommen harmlos. Beim Bingo im Altersheim ist mehr los. Sich nicht in die Karten schauen lassen, vereiste Abhänge runterjagen.
Zum anderen zerfasert ihm das Thema. Chastain ist die Erzählerin, sie feuert mit Wortsalven um sich und kommt quasi in jeder Szene vor.
Damit trägt der Regisseur am Ende etwas dick auf: Der mögliche Versuch, dem Drama noch mehr Tiefgang zu geben, wäre nicht nötig gewesen.
